A study of the chimney 14 June 2011
As if all the bees we had were not enough…. I have finally located the source of bee noise that I always heard around the back of the house. It is not bees working local vegetation…it appears to be a nest of bees in the chimney cavity who have gained access about 12 ft up in the crumbling lime mortar. Oh for heavens sake! It remains to be seen whether they are honey bees and if so, whether they are feral, recent or have been there forever….

They obviously know a good thing/place/family to join.
So presumably they would remain in mortar and not house in a hive?

Can’t see them today, but crawled up to inspect. big cavity that will need filling in. No evidence of bee activity today, so could have been scouts or could have been mortar bees or something else. Almost impossible to extract bees from a chimney, though any casts or swarms from that colony are fair game to try and catch.
