Birds of Budding cottage
Well, we finally worked out where the knocking sound was coming from – a spotted woodpecker was trying to drill into the nest box on the wall that contained a family of blue-tits. What I didn’t realise was that woodpeckers did this to try and get to; and eat, the baby birds. So, we had to try and stop it!
After a discussion about using plastic discs, mesh or something else; but needing to not nail into a box with living contents – we found a plate on the trackway that looked like it had fallen off a car underside. It had two holes in it. With a handful of filer/glue we were ready to go and I leaned out of the bathroom window to afix said solution.
Three quarters of an hour later the blue-tits were happily going back in and out…. now we wait.
24 hours later the woodpecker came back – but left more rapidly than before. Let’s hope it got the message. (No additional pecking on the box sides). However, its too late now to check on the blue-tits. Here’s to hoping they are still okay!
