Hive 1 – original  hive

I think the bees have swarmed. The hive is just packed full of drones. I could’nt move for drones. There is no uncapped brood or BIAS but the cells are polished up ready indicating that someone is around and expected to start work soon. There are a couple of torn down queen cells, evidencing there may be a new girl on the block.

We lost a swarm a couple of weeks ago (mid May) that went high into the trees – so that was probably it.

When I was opening up and checking through, I hope I didn’t disrupt any mating flights; though last Saturday there was quite a cluster of bees at the front of the cottage hanging around that eventually dispersed, so possible…..

Anyway, there is capped brood and some uncapped brood and also some stores. I left the super on – ever the optimist.

These were the bees that pretty much stung me last, when I was suited up and trying to clear nettles around the hives.  I had a gardening glove on which left an inch of wrist exposed – and that was, apparently, enough.  I guess the smell of nettles being squashed is something else that can upset bees!!!
